For many years, Lynn Austin nurtured a desire to write but frequent travels and the demands of her growing family postponed her career. When her husband's work took Lynn to Bogota, Colombia, for two years, she used the B.A. she'd earned at Southern Connecticut State University to become a teacher. After returning to the U.S., the Austins moved to Anderson, Indiana, Thunder Bay, Ontario, and later to Winnipeg, Manitoba.

It was during the long Canadian winters at home with her children that Lynn made progress on her dream to write, carving out a few hours of writing time each day while her children napped. Lynn credits her early experience of learning to write amid the chaos of family life for her ability to be a productive writer while making sure her family remains her top priority.

Extended family is also very important to Austin, and it was a lively discussion between Lynn, her mother, grandmother (age 98), and daughter concerning the change in women's roles through the generations that sparked the inspiration for her novel Eve's Daughters.

Along with reading, two of Lynn's lifelong passions are history and archaeology. While researching her Biblical fiction series, Chronicles of the Kings, these two interests led her to pursue graduate studies in Biblical Backgrounds and Archaeology through Southwestern Theological Seminary. She and her son traveled to Israel during the summer of 1989 to take part in an archaeological dig at the ancient city of Timnah. This experience contributed to the inspiration for her novel Wings of Refuge.

Lynn resigned from teaching to write full-time in 1992. Since then she has published twelve novels. Five of her historical novels have won Christy Awards in 2002, 2003, 2004, 2008, and 2009 for excellence in Christian Fiction. And two of her inspirational fiction books were chosen by Library Journal for their top picks in 2003, and 2005. One of Lynn's novels has been made into a movie for the Hallmark Channel, starring actress Shirley Jones. Ms Jones received a 2006 Emmy Award nomination for her portrayal of Aunt Batty in the film.

Robin Jones Gunn was born in Wisconsin and lived on a dairy farm until her family moved to southern California when she was five years old. Gayle is the award winning author of more than forty books. She has been a Christy finalist three times for her novels Spring Rain, Summer Shadows, and Winter Winds. Her novel Autumn Dreams won the prestigious Romance Writers of America's RITA Award for Best Inspirational Romance. Summer Shadows was voted the Inspirational Readers Choice Contest Book of the Year (tied with fellow author Brandilyn Collins).

Gayle has won the Holt Medallion three times for The Decision, Caught in a Bind, and Autumn Dreams. Beginning in 1998, Janelle Mowery coordinated and wrote for the Children’s Ministry of a Christian website called The Invisible Connection. When the holder of that site discontinued the ministry and website in the year 2000, she began writing inspirational fiction romance novels.

Janelle became a member of American Christian Fiction Writers in the year 2002 and is an active member and leader in one of their critique groups, which has provided many opportunities for growth and development. In 2004, she had a short story titled ‘A Fair Chance’ published in the e-magazine, Romancing the Christian Heart. I grew up in a book-loving home. Actually, that’s not entirely accurate. My mom loves books. My dad loves to read the first chapters of books and then make us all listen as he recites his favorite passages. I, however, enjoy reading books in their entirety and came into writing as a result of book-love. After earning two fancy degrees in education and Spanish, I promptly let the thinking part of my brain take a breather and instead became pregnant. (I’m sure a lot of other things happened between early literacy and pregnancy but I don’t really remember any of that. If you also have shared your uterus with another human, you understand.)

In an effort to author a book that would entertain my sassy, irreverent, breast-feeding/drooping friends, I wrote my first novel, Balancing Act. People were so nice to me after that, I decided to continue with writing. Also, I can’t craft, knit, or scrapbook, so what else was a nice, Christian girl to do?

In addition to writing books to make my friends laugh and cry, I observe the chaos at the home I share with my unfailingly supportive husband and three offspring. We’re doing our best and so far, no one’s been to prison.

When I’m not typing my heart out (or checking email), I teach at a super-sized high school in Arkansas.

My students are constantly telling me how my teaching changes their lives and turned them away from drugs, gangs, and C-SPAN.

A. I got my camera confiscated by big boys with guns at the American Embassy in Europe this past summer. O la la!

B. I once worked in a seed mill office and cleaned out mice on a regular basis. Ew.

C. I’m a former drama teacher.

D. I didn’t pass my drivers test the first time. Or the second…

E. I attract stray animals like a magnet.

F. I used to assemble and test paint ball guns for a local factory...

Since my current job leaves me with very little free time, I believe in spending my spare hours in meaningful, intellectual pursuits such as:

-writing my name in the dust on my furniture

What inspired you to write Vanishing Act?

After finishing my first book, The Kidnapping of Kenzie Thorn, I couldn’t wait to write Nate’s story. He played a small role in the first book, and I wanted so much to explore his story in his own book. And then as I unpacked his story, I discovered the fear that he lived in. As I wrote Vanishing Act, I realized that I was dealing with a lot of fear in my own life, and as my characters came to terms with trusting God with theirs, I did, too.

Do you have a favorite scene from the book?

My favorite is one where Nate and Danielle end up locked in the trunk of a car together. They’ve been in the middle of a fight, but when they’re literally locked together, they have to work things out. They’re funny and a tad bit snarky in this scene, and it’s fun to throw them into a situation like this.

Do we "see" some of you in your characters?

Sure, there are parts of me in my characters. Like me, Nate has a go-to when he feels stressed. He’s a coffee drinker. I am not a coffee fan, but I also have a go-to when stress arrives. I’m a shopper.

If you were casting actors for a movie of Vanishing Act, who would you choose?

Nate always was Brandon Heath in my mind. Maybe a little older than Brandon now, but the steel blue eyes and the ever-present 5 o’clock shadow are 100% Brandon. And Danielle, with her brown hair and petite frame, always reminded me of Sophia Bush from One Tree Hill.

Do you read Christian fiction yourself? If so, some favorite authors or books both Christian and/or secular?

I love Christian fiction and read lots of it. Lately I’ve been reading Kaye Dacus’ contemporary romances and really enjoying those. This year I also read Denise Hunter’s The Seaside Letters and loved that. I’ve also been reading Pride and Prejudice, for the first time ever, and I can’t believe how much I’ve been missing out on all these years. :) Jane Austen really is brilliant.

What book(s) are on your nightstand?

Of course, I’m reading Pride and Prejudice. I’m also reading Plan B by Pete Wilson, a nonfiction book about what to do when life doesn’t turn out like you thought it would. I seem to be toggling back and forth between these two books.

Can you share a little of your own personal faith journey with us?

I’ve trusted God with my life a long time ago, but I think that it’s easy for all of us to fall into fear. Fear and worry seem to be things that are acceptable in the church, but the Bible is pretty clear, “Fear not.” It reminds us that we haven’t been given a spirit of fear but of power and love and self-discipline. While I was writing Vanishing Act, I spent a lot of time worried. Afraid of failing, afraid of unrealistic expectations for myself, afraid of falling flat on my face. Writing this book helped to remind me that fear doesn’t have to be part of our daily lives. It’s a decision to trust God with our everyday.

Can you tell us what’s on your desk right now? What can readers look forward to in the years to come?

I just turned in the manuscript for my third book, tentatively titled Code of Justice. It features Heather Sloan, another FBI agent who works with Nate and Myles from my first two books. Heather’s story opens with a helicopter crash where her sister is killed. Thus begins Heather’s journey of uncovering a drug ring and her search for justice—and love. Now that I’ve turned that book in, I’m working on a proposal for a military series that I hope will be next.

From Susan: I've always loved reading, history, and horses. These things come together in several of my historical books. My young adult novel, Sarah's Long Ride, also spotlights horses and the rugged sport of endurance riding, as does the contemporary romance Trail to Justice. I took a vocational course in horseshoeing after earning a bachelor's degree in history. I don't shoe horses anymore, but the experience has come in handy in writing my books.

Another longtime hobby of mine is genealogy, which has led me down many fascinating paths. I'm proud to be a DAR member! Some of Jim's and my quirkier ancestors have inspired fictional characters.

For many years I worked for the Central Maine Morning Sentinel as a freelancer, covering local government, school board meetings, business news, fires, auto accidents, and other local events, including a murder trial. I've also written many profiles and features for the newspaper and its special sections. This experience was a great help in developing fictional characters and writing realistic scenes. I also published nonfiction articles in several magazines and had several short stories appear in Woman's World, Grit, and Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine.

My husband, Jim, and I moved to his birth state, Oregon, for a while after we were married, but decided to move back to Maine and be near my family. We're so glad we did. It allowed our six children to grow up feeling close to their cousins and grandparents, and some of Jim's family have even moved to Maine!

Our children are all home-schooled. The two youngest are still learning at home. Jim recently retired from his vocation as an editor at a daily newspaper, and we’ve moved from Maine to Kentucky.
